Well, if, like me, you’re over work on this Friday, then get involved in even more work avoidance by checking out the cool street styles snapped in Paris by Refinery 29’s Mr. Newton. LFW Top Looks February 25th, 2010These are my very favourite looks from LFW, with a huge smiley face on the ready to wear collections presented by Acne, Alice Temperley and Burberry. Grazia Magazine reports that Burberry’s military jackets and flying coats are already being hailed as the trend for the season ahead. Watch the show here. Even better, Burberry’s Christopher Bailey has just announced that consumers can – for the first time ever – order selected pieces from the A/W ‘10 collection from their online shop. Yay for technology! All photos: style.com Snapped! The Sartorialist In Love February 23rd, 2010Classic photos of streetstyle photographer and artist Garance Dore and her man Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist at London Fashion Week, snapped by Juliet, iforone’s roving LFW style scout! Did I mention I’d give my left eye-teeth to be there? Fashion Editors Storm The House February 23rd, 2010From Juliet who is the envy of us all as an attendee of London Fashion Week… I would even be happy to stand in a puddle of rain to be there! For a full LFW update, be sure to visit her fabulous website, Adorn London, for a news feed that’s dripping in jewels! Bad Hat Day February 22nd, 2010Africa at NY Fashion Week February 16th, 2010
Loin Cloth and Ashes’ collection was influenced by the art of origami, and consisted largely of high waisted separates in greys and metallics. My favourite was a beautifully draped pair of silky harem pants. Loved them! The last designer out was Deola Sagoe, and seemed to be the favourite of the night, earning her an almost standing ovation (fashionistas half standing, half squatting in their super high heels). Her designs showed lots of military and eighties influence and inspired Vanity Fair’s Fashion Director Michael Roberts to whip out his camera to snap the last few dresses. The Arise shows are always festive events in a fashion week that can be pretty serious – yes that was Estée Lauder supermodel Liya Kebede fist-pumping in the front row. I overheard some mutterings around me about the lack of colour and more traditional African beading and embroidery that went something like ‘Hey man, where’s all the tribal stuff?’ So I say yay to Arise for continuing to shift the world’s stereotypes of what African fashion is. Nats Dixon went to the Positive Heroes Fashion Show that was held at Runway in Cape Town last Thursday, and reported back that it was a ‘fabby event! The venue was great, and the MC, Talia, was slick and a total pro. We waited ages for it to start but the hilarious, gum-chewing shmodel on the ramp and the complimentary Peronis at the door kept us entertained.’
All the models/stylist/sound and venue people did the work for gratis, so a nice gesture for Positive Heroes who organised the event to raise awareness around the many inspirational role models living with HIV in this country.
As for the fashion cred of the show, designers included high-profile names like Kluk/CGDT, Gavin Rajah and Lunar, who’s collection was ‘exquisite,’ says Nats. ‘Stiaan Louw’s stuff was dark and edgy, X&O had a great menswear range while Craig Port’s sense of humour made me smile. At the auction, Label Online Boutique sold a wow Acne dress for more than its retail price.’
All in all, a hugely successful evening, with a packed audience full of industry names – an accomplished feat considering it was held the same night as the SA Fashion Week Summer Collections in Cape Town – a fact that apparently had organisers on both sides a tad hot and bothered… Luckily neither event seemed worse off for the double date, and the Positive Heroes team can pat themselves on the back for raising more than R80 000 for charity.
’We wanted to create an atmosphere of hope and inspiration’, says Mari Groenewald, stylist at the event. It seems they did just that.

Cool Katie October 9th, 2009
Loving the play of sheers and drapery in Katie Gallagher’s spring/summer 2009 “Shroud” collection – one of the hot new names to watch out for in the future.
Dearie Me… October 7th, 2009
OK, I take it back: Lily Allen for Chanel might be misguided but it’s not career-wreckingly embarrassing.
Lindsay Lohan’s debut at Paris Fashion Week two days ago as artistic advisor to the head of Emanuel Ungaro’s design team, Estrella Archs, on the other hand, has been deemed a total train-wreck.
The collection, complete with sequin nipple pasties, was referred to as ‘a joke’ and ‘tasteless’ by international press. Eish…
May this be the last year of the celebrity cult, and the last time I ever blog about Lindsay Lohan or Lily Allen! Clive Rundle Backstage September 25th, 2009
Here they are, the photos I promised you, shot exclusively for iforone by Chris Saunders.
It was a whirlwind back there, but Chris – who shot Black Coffee backstage during Berlin Fashion Week - is an old hand at snapping beautiful images from odd spots. At one stage he was standing on top of a staircase, inside one of the changing rooms!
I think the photos sum up the whirlwind mayhem that goes into putting on a production like a Clive Rundle fashion show.
Africa Storms New York September 17th, 2009
![]() Jewel By Lisa
Emma Jordan, Editor of Arise Magazine, sent me these images of the ARISE Promise of Africa Collective at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, which was well received by notoriously hard-to-please New York fashionistas.
Am loving the snappy geometric print suit that Freja Beha wore to open the show. It’s part of Nigerian designer Lisa Folawiyo’s Jewel by Lisa range that received rave reviews all round.
The New York Post said: “Jewel by Lisa was the standout collection of the evening. Her bold color palette, which includes a rich mustard, blood red and an ocean blue, are easy on the eye and her charming paisleys and mosaic prints were the perfect foil for the intricate beadwork on her dresses.”
I was also happy to hear that homegrown talent, David Tlale, who just happens to be a past winner of the Elle New Talent Awards (which was held in Jo’burg last night – watch the clip below) did really well with a tight collection of sophisticated, monochromatic silhouettes, complete with his signature dramatic detailing.
It’s fantastic that African designers now have the opportunity to show on an international platform like NY Fashion Week, with models like Coco Rocha, Chanel Iman and Oluchi walking the ramp for them. Viva Africa!
SA’s Got Talent September 10th, 2009
You can’t deny we’re a country brimming with raw talent, which is what makes the annual Elle New Talent Awards show at SSAFW so exciting, especially considering designers like Tiaan Nagel and David Tlale are previous winners.
I just received my invite to the official ELLE New Talent before party that’s being held next week, and in anticipation of meeting the finalists, I’ve just spent the past half hour checking out who they all are. These are my favourites, but to vote for yours, visit the website.
Mmn, I Don’t Think So August 24th, 2009
Didn’t love Dax Martin’s S&M one-pieces. I can appreciate the innovation involved in creating seamless garments like these, but design-wise, it feels very outdated. More at home in the pages of lad-mags like FHM than on the runway at Fashion Week.

Suzaan Heyns was the show to see at Arise Cape Town Fashion Week. This young talent was one of few who brought a well-defined clothing concept to the runway. Fashion-forward looks, complete with sculpted tailoring and signature contrasts, like leather patchwork against soft, sheer fabrics in neutral tones, made for an impressively holistic show.
It was also good to see the hair and make-up styling work harder than usual, with a nod to the Kabuki for Gareth Pugh-style 3-dimensional lashes upping the avant-garde ante.

Classic moment: Sharon Becker, fashion editor at Elle, giggling to her neighbour, during Craig Port’s… ahem, revealing, swimwear show. Faced with so much man-flesh on the runway, I’d giggle too…

My only question after reviewing Lanvin’s Menswear Spring 2010 RTW Collection is what were designers Alber Elbaz and Lucas Ossendrijver smoking when they decided to send a collection complete with crotch-hugging, high-waisted pants and navel-grazing bomber jackets down the runway?
Like many fashion journalists will, I could sit here and say how brilliant they are to challenge gender stereotypes and the accepted status quo. I could gush on about how this collection is fashion-forward, provocative and celebrates individuality, but I’m a hot blooded woman and my honest reaction is that they sent a group of good looking men down the runway looking really, really silly.
You could then try telling me that men around the globe will soon be fighting over that last pair of Old Man pants that flare out at the hips and taper at the ankle but I might not be able to hear you, I’ll be laughing so hard. And when my tears of hysterical mirth finally dry, I’ll be calm enough to ask you one simple question: when did menswear designers stop producing menswear collections? |
