So I popped in to Phillipa Green’s studio on Friday and fell in love with the new perspex cuffs she’s making which feature a beautiful crocheted flower on top.
They look amazing on the arm and are available in a soft neutral and black – making it easy to wear with just about anything.
Even better, the flowers are crocheted by women at a community craft project so by buying one, you’re helping to uplift and empower.

From Sarah, ‘I stumbled upon the Alexandra del Lago boutique in Cape Quarter and had to stop myself from whipping out my credit card and going wild!
Their handbags and cuffs are made out of buttery soft python with intricate embroidery of large semi-precious stones like citrines, turquoises, green jaspers and amethysts all artfully intertwined with gold and silver butterflies and dragon flies.
Prices range from R2100 for the cuffs and between R5000 – R7000 for the bags. I want, I want, I want!’

Beautiful, beautiful: A lust have from Hermès scarf fan, Sarah, who has just ordered the brand’s coffee table book that celebrates the history of the iconic Hermès scarf.
She says: ‘It is an anthology of a 150 different scarves illustrating the timeless Hermès history, themes, styles and inspiration. The limited collector’s edition has a silk cover and pages that have been gilded with gold…If you are as big a Hermès fan as I am, and your name hasn’t quite gotten on the Croc Birkin list yet, this book is a nice start!’

From Natalie, who told me about Amsterdam designer, Kim Van Beek, when she returned from her trip last year:
Kim – who is a relative newcomer to the hip Amsterdam fashion apparel scene – travelled to Nepal to make her latest range of bags – which include laptop and handbag variety. Kim produced the bags in collaboration with The Association of Craft Producers in Kathmandu.
Handmade using felt , suede and silk they include clever detailing on the innards. One-eighth Indonesian, Kim has a strong leaning towards eastern philosophy and culture and she works this into her design symbols. The bags are available through Kim, see her website.
LOMO me February 9th, 2010
 My new Lomo love
This is a holiday of photographs… Today I finally bought my very own Lomography Diana F+ camera and have spent a happy half an hour with Ian (style scout gone AWOL since the appearance of Ava The Angelic) assembling it. Am taking it to Thailand and will can’t wait to start experimenting with it.
Then, my sister knows that I’ve always wanted a polaroid camera but Scruff’s New Age obsession has meant stern dismissal of the art form up to this point. I also thought they were defunct due to the melt-down of the Polaroid brand but Fuji has launched a new range of polaroid cameras and, thanks to my sib, I am now the proud owner of a Hello Kitty (yes yes, can you believe it!) Fuji polaroid camera.
As I write this I am busy sticking cheesy polaroids of myself on her fridge, he he mwooo haaaaa haaaaa.
I Heart HK (Hong Kong and Hello Kitty!)
 Zip me up, baby!
Considering Mr Rundle’s last collection largely featured zippers in every conceivable variation, methinks he would like my new S&M’ish boots that stopped me in my tracks this afternoon… Can’t wait to wear them out!

More great news: illustrator Beatrice Boyle’s seriously hot range of printed t-shirts and dresses are now available in SA, from Neo Boutique at the One & Only Hotel in the Waterfront. They recently caused a stir when displayed in the windows of Browns Focus, along with her art. Loving the post-party girls and their the-day-after-the-night-before make-up.

From Sam, ‘Wow! So rather than force yourself to buy three new pairs of shoes for the season, how about buying one accessory that updates the look for you?
I found this chain-detailed accessory in Aldo - it sits neatly on top of your ankle/shoe/high boot to instantly update this season’s superhot stud and chain á la Balmain look… Am in love!’
OK so I know I spend a lot of time banging on about shoes – let’s call it one of very few vices I have left!
The thing is, I just can’t get enough. And I’m now completely, utterly, unfathomably in lurrrve with this season’s ultra-sexy, skyscraper ankle boots.
The Bally campaign stopped me in my tracks and when I went searching, I found these similarly beauteous styles on net-a-porter.com from Givenchy, Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin. Sigh, happiness in a size 39.

Lou & Me January 18th, 2010

Was cruising around the V&A Waterfront last night and smiled to see that durban accessories designer Lou Harvey’s range is now available at one of the caravans outside Cinema Nouveau.
New moms swear by LH’s good looking and practical nappy bags, her super-sized beach bags, cute wallets and slops in gorgeous graphic prints are also a must-have.

Just added to my lust list – the new book by photographer Daniele Tamagni called Gentlemen of Bacongo.
The book captures the spirit and style of a fashion movement – started, and maintained, predominantly by men - in the Congo called Le Sape (Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes, or the Society of Tastemakers and Elegant People) that combines the French flamboyance of their colonial heritage with their own personal style.
What’s most startling is that many of them live in poverty, and the contrast of designer threads photographed against slum dwellings makes for pretty powerful images.
The photographer has included interviews with some notable sapeurs, like Michel who says simply, ‘”A Congolese sapeur is a happy man even if he does not eat, because wearing proper clothes feeds the soul and gives pleasure to the body.”
OK, hectic. Still, it’s interesting that these images could so easily have been taken in SA where the irreverant style of the hard-to-miss Smarteez are defining Soweto youth culture right now…

These fab ‘heal-less’ Mary-Janes were created by London-based shoe designer, Natacha Marro (whose client list includes David Bowie, Gwen Stefani, Goldfrapp, Daphne Guinness and Grace Jones) exclusively for online shop 20ltd.com.
It’s an amazing website that offers exclusive limited edition luxury products that are created specifically for the site. If you’re looking for truly authentic design, this is the place to go.
There are only 10 pairs of these shoes available, and they will never be made again, so if red glitter is your thing, you have the balance of a yogi and a mere 485 pounds lying around in spare change, check it out.

I must have a million of those eco-friendly shopping bags that come in every shade of ugly at home – bought in the vain hope that I might do the planet some good. Problem is, I never remember to take them with me.
Then I got this email from Jo’burg Style Scout, Sam Morrison, who emailed saying, ‘I’m not an obsessive eco-ista but these fold-up shopping bags are a super cool solution to guilt-free shopping.’
They’re called Envirosax and can carry the equivalent of two plastic shopping bags of groceries. They’re made of polyester and come with reinforced seams, so are strong and waterproof.
Their best feature, however, is that they fold up to a neat 10cm rectangle – ‘A perfect fit for my handbag,’ says Sam, adding, ‘In fact, I carry three in my handbag at once.’
They’re a big hit overseas, and lucky for us can be found nationwide at Exclusive Books or Melissa’s in Cape Town.

 Tammy Frazer
This has to rate as my favourite launch of recent times, and believe me when I say I’ve been to a few!
Lindiwe Suttle, Brad and Bridget Armitage and Colin Moss all gathered together to toast the latest initiative of their friend, the lovely and exceptionally talented perfumer Tammy Frazer, who creates sensational smells by mixing together only the purest of natural and organic ingredients.
Her established scents can already by found in Harrods and Anthropologie so don’t miss out on her latest launch product: a solid perfume that comes neatly packaged in a wooden compact engraved with a Heather Moore etching.

The launch was slick and stylish: held at Hawksmoor Antiques in De Waterkant, it made the most of showing off the to-die-for packaging of the fragrances as well as the edgy-cool creative for the campaign, featuring Lindiwe as a ‘warrior for nature’…
Shot by Andrew Brauteseth, it is by far the most conceptually interesting fashion campaign by a brand that I’ve seen locally in a long while. Very impressed.

 Doef doef
A friend of mine was wearing one of these delicate pendants today and when I asked about it, told me that a friend of hers is heading up this very cool initiative called My Gold Heart.
The teeny pendants are available on different coloured thread and 30% of the campaign’s net profits from the sale of the gold hearts are being donated to a worthwhile cause because, and I quote, ‘it makes our hearts feel good!’ Sweet.
 Me new Tom Ford sunnies
Dear Tom,
Let me just start off by saying that I might have a teeny crush on you.
Not in an inappropriate way, mind you: I just think a man who can rebel against one of the biggest luxury houses in the world then launch his own effortlessly hip brand and then, just because he can, also rack up Oscar nominations for his first attempt as film director, is pretty damn amazing.
The fact that I haven’t taken my new Tom Ford sunnies off since getting them last week might also have something to do with my current fondness, of course, but I like to think that I’m better than that. Maybe not. Happiness, right now, is the snug sexiness of these classic tortoiseshell beauties. Bliss.
For more proof of Tom’s loveliness, watch the clip.

I love presents, especially when I’m the one getting them. Thanks to the trio of fabulous friendals who gave me my new favourite accessory (amongst other fabulous goodies) – this wooden bird pendant from Dokter And Misses.
Am so spoilt and lucky to have you, as friends and as shopping soul sisters!
Yes, the carpet is hideous, but the shoes... Wunderbar!
 So simple, so effective...
How much amazingness? Nats Dixon brought back this vintage edition of Elle Magazine from 1953 back from Paris for me, and only shed a few tears as she handed it over
It’s a gem copy, with black and white illustrated ads (lots of ads for baby stuff and toothpaste!) and a Mills & Boon-style story at the back called ‘La Duchesse Ardente’ about the ‘passions of the Duchess’. Mmn… Still, rate the fashion story on cotton dresses as my favourite – it’s très jolie!
What a reality check too – to stop and think where magazines were just a few decades ago. I have to be honest, it’s pretty refreshing to look at a cover that hasn’t been degraded with ‘Buy Me’ or ‘Win This’ barkers and flip through editorial pages without being assaulted by an endless array of puffy-lipped celebrities and here-today-gone-tomorrow trends. It feels real.
Thanks Nats, what an amazing gift. It’s officially taken pride of place on my coffee table.
 Pretty, huh?
Sale Day December 8th, 2009
All I want for Christmas is...
I had a great morning scouting around the open sale day by jeweller Janine Binneman and friends that featured stalls selling anything and everything from shwe-shwe ballet pumps and wellington socks to real homemade lemonade.
I’ve been feeling less than inspired when it comes to present shopping and since I was on the lookout for Xmas pressies as well as a b’day present for a friend, this was a not-to-be-missed shopping opportunity.
I snapped up a fab metallic leather wrap-around bracelet for my friend, then stopped dead in my tracks when I saw Janine’s latest series of organice pieces, in particular a pair of leaf earrings and the stunning leaf ring pictured above (centre).
Another friend of mind snapped up the ring before I could get there so I happily settled for the earrings, which are delicate and exquisitely mismatched.
I know, I know – I wasn’t there to shop for myself. But it’s been a long year and sometimes the person who most deserves a little something is… me!

If you’re itching to spend your Christmas bonus (if you were lucky enough to get one!), then you might well be tempted by some of the droolworthy designer threads in the Summer Collection 2009/2010 at NEO Boutique at the One & Only Hotel.
Earlier this week, the boutique hosted a group of us for a fashion show and spoily cocktail party to show off the season’s must-buys from labels like Stella McCartney, YSL, Temperley and Balenciaga, as well as to-die-for shoes, bags, belts and small leather accessories by Leather Rose, the first local brand to make it onto the shelves of this exclusive boutique .
Tempting indeed… And so amazing to have brands like these readily available in Slaapstad. At last!
Ooh, pretty pretty!
A friend sent me images of incredible jewellery made by CPUT graduate Theresa Burger. I love her style, and wanted to know more about these two rings that caught my eye.

The wooden ring, says Theresa, is made out of Leleshwa wood from Kenya. ‘It was the first time I worked in wood so I worked carefully to incorporate the rough wood texture with the smooth of the silver.’

The second ring – my favourite – is made up of 18ct gold wires set in to resin. ‘The price of metals is so high that I’ve been experimenting a lot with resin for my larger designs’, says Theresa.
The newly graduated artist wants to start her range and open a store in Cape Town, but first is off to travel overseas. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of her once she returns.
For more info on her work, contact Theresa through her website

See previous post on Monique Du Preez’s stilettos… Here’s the proof of their beauteousness as well as potential for use as a weapon – they’re that stiletto-ish! Ha ha.

OK I know it looks a bit like an 1820 settler’s frokkie, but I am in lust with this grey dress that I found at Luna in Florida Road in Durban.
And no, it’s not just because I have an unhealthy obsession with grey… I just think the frilled collar, cuffs and pleated breast are so demure, you have to wonder what’s beneath?!!
Maybe Manolo should just stick with heels
According to the Telegraph UK, this flat summer sandal is the latest creation from Manolo Blahnik’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection.
My question to you is, would you wear it? And if you would, what with? It looks like road-kill Dalmation!
