Dazed & Confused

So I thought this was pretty novel: Swatch have asked AnOther Magazine, Dazed & Confused, V, i-D, Nylon and Wallpaper to compete with one another by shooting their latest range, the 80s inspired Colour Codes Collection, as and how they want.

Visitors to the magazines’ websites then vote for their favourite shoot and stand the chance of winning a watch… Exposure across six brands in a fun, visually creative and digitally interactive way. Clever Swatch! I voted for Dazed&Confused’s effort – will keep you posted if I win the watch! To see all the magazine shoots and to cast your vote, click here

AnOther Mag Cover Phwoar!

How beauteous? Marion Cotillard smoulders as this month’s covergirl on AnOther Magazine

Even better is the Limited Edition cover that, following on from their last issue which featured four different Limited Edition Covers with a different covergirl (Katie Holmes, Kate Moss, Natalie Portman and Vanessa Paradis) on each.

Interesting concept as far as publishing trends go – unlike SA, it seems UK magazine publishers like AnOther mag and Elle UK (who offer subscribers exclusive covers too) are seriously investing in the look and feel of their magazines.

By offering exclusive content, like a different, visually intriguing cover to a limited number of readers, you immediately make readers feel rewarded and special. As a result of their new cover strategy, I’ve done something that I’ve never done before and have actually subscribed to a magazine, starting with Elle UK and now AnOther Magazine. Can’t wait to get them in the post.

Limited Edition Cover Phwoar!

I want this one!

Excerpt from the cover story that I loved:

“Inspired by the instruction-based art of the Fluxus movement, AnOther Magazine gave cover star Marion Cotillard three instructions before her interview: bring an object you love; a photograph that makes you smile; and a piece of writing that has taught you something.

The first object that tumbled from her bag was a vintage, folding Polaroid SX70, small enough to slide into her jacket pocket, a constant accompaniment across time zones and film sets. Her photographic heroes are Sarah Moon and Peter Beard.

As for the photograph, she told us, “I couldn’t choose one. So I brought three. There’s a wood in Corsica where I went on holiday, a beach near Bordeaux I always go to, and a beautiful wood outside Paris, where I often stay with a friend.”

The photographs – otherworldly, mysterious, peaceful havens – seemed to be a kind of quiet, talismanic antidote to the lively chaos that has surrounded Cotillard since 2007.

The last object Cotillard brought along seemed to bring us full circle to her childhood quest for answers. She picked up a lovingly battered paperback, a collection of speeches, Freedom from the Known, given by the philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti.

“It’s hard to choose one book that has changed things in your life,” she smiled. “But the way he talks about fears, happiness, violence, time, life, death, us. How to find your own vision, and understand human beings, is so inspiring.

As an actress, I feel like an anthropologist of human emotions. I don’t observe people because I’m an actress and I want to steal things from them. It’s the other way around – I’m an actress because I find human beings so very interesting.”

margot molynuex 1 One To Watch

posted a while ago about the up and coming young designer Margot Molyneux and her brilliant peg-leg pants (which I subsequently bought and have worn to death) so I’m very happy to feature this shoot by Brett Rubin of her latest collection, available at Mungo & Jemima in Long Street.

I love this editorial - just wish Deluxe Magazine was still around as it’s perfect for it! Well done to Brett and the rest of his team – stylist Nicole Van Heerden and make-up artist Jade Leggat.

The Dream Team   February 1st, 2010

dossier1 The Dream Team

Sarah Hoberman braving the heat, Paris-style!

Waking up at 5am (OK, I overslept, it was 5:45am) on a Saturday is not something I try to do a lot, but this was far too exciting to miss…

An amazing shoot for Dossier on the ‘farm’ in Tamboerskloof, which I did not even know existed!

The dream team of Marguerite Oelofse (vibing a Madonna-from-the-80’s look with a platinum blonde bob and Wayfarer sunnies), Mari Groenewald (who, ahem, had only had a few hours precious sleep, say no more!), Jade Leggat – oh she of the porcelain skin who braved the 30-something degree heat to create insane hair and make-up, and Sarah The Fantastic, who must be the most organised person on this planet.

We worked ahead of schedule and finished up in time for Marguerite to get the The Met… Nice work everyone!

Mother Nature   January 19th, 2010

MEL BLES 3131 750x509 Mother Nature

Insane shoot from Test - a website created by Jaime Perlman, Art Director of British Vogue, as a platform where photographers, stylists, models, and hair and makeup teams can collaborate on new ideas.

“A few of the artists who have worked with Test — such as Norbert Schoerner, Jacob Sutton, Catherine Servel, and Jermaine Francis — have already contributed to Vogue,” says Perlman.

“But Test also allows me to work with artists who are less established … In that sense, it’s opened my eyes to people who are potential contenders and allows me to mark people in the industry as “ones to watch” who might grace the pages of Vogue in the future.”

Everyone keeps talking about how digital media is killing print and creativity but I think this kind of project shows how it can extend, embrace and uplift the arts – what an amazing initiative. I wonder if they accept South African submissions…

Colour Pops   January 19th, 2010

Dossier Chloe Opener Colour Pops

I didn’t manage to get the whole shoot, but here is the opener of the shoot I styled, produced and wrote for Dossier Magazine on Chloe Townsend of Missibaba.

Very proud of this shoot as I was short of a stylist and landed up doing it myself – no mean feat as I’ve never styled anything but myself before and was just a little bit nervous. It turned out to be a great day, with the fabulous photographer Damon Fourie and make-up artist Jade Leggat transforming the beautiful Lala into a mystical neon bird of paradise.

Happy, happy, happy, happy, happy!

A while ago I tweeted about an incredible interview I did with a very interesting man. Here it is – the story I wrote for Dossier on designer Clive Rundle after his epic show at SAFW last year, and the shoot that Mia (editor of Dossier) did with Clive’s favourite model, Nina Milner.

Brad’s Beer   January 12th, 2010

 Brads Beer

Check it out: an article I wrote for Private Edition on Brad Armitage, co-owner of bespoke beer salon and charcuterie, &Union in Bree Street.

Brad and his partner, Rui, were the brains behind the original Vida stores and after selling, set their sights on producing high-end, handcrafted and all-natural ales and alcohol – we tasted their organic tequila last time we popped past, and it’s goooood…

The salon is compact but buzzy and has a pub feel – but a very slick pub at that – with an electic crowd who gather to eat, drink and listen to live music, like the sublime Lindiwe Suttle who plays every Wednesday night.  Well worth a visit, or many.

The Big Debate   January 11th, 2010

I got an email from New York style scout, Andree, late last week which urged me to check out the controversial shoot in V Magazine called ‘One Size Fits All’, featuring Crystal Renn, a plus sized model, and Jacquelyn Jablonksi, a straight-size model.

opener The Big Debate

The aim of the shoot was to highlight that women of any size can wear high-end fashion, but the general consensus is that it does exactly the opposite, with Jezebel.com writing “As great a step that it is that plus-size models are increasingly garnering editorial attention beyond the usual “Love Your Body” special issues, it’s a little bit disappointing that someone decided this one needed a straight-size model for a chaperone.

1 The Big Debate

And the way the entire shoot is structured to encourage the reader to compare Renn to Jablonski — as if that’s what we women need, to decide the age-old battle between plus-size and straight-size models, once and for all! — just makes me want to barf.

500x 098 terry richardson 2 The Big Debate

The point shouldn’t be to focus on the differences between these women and decide who looks better. We all know Crystal Renn is a compelling model all on her own — and Jacquelyn Jablonski, though a relative newcomer, isn’t half bad either. It’s pitting them against each other that does them both a disservice. So why did V and Terry Richardson think it necessary?”

I couldn’t agree more.

Thankfully Jade has a steady hand!

Thankfully Jade has a steady hand!

Last week was mayhem – again, again – when will I get control? Sigh, it seriously is the silly season…

Anyhoo, some fun photos of the latest Dossier shoot for the Feb 2010  issue that we shot at my house with the brilliant, brilliant Dewald Daniels, styled by Mari Groenewald, with Jade Leggat on hair and make-up and the beautiful Kudzani from Boss as our star, especially when she gave us the OK to shave half her hair off!

I’ll post up the finished pages when they are published, so there’s a bit of a wait but I was so happy with the result, I can’t wait to see what the layout looks like.

Super Sneaky   December 10th, 2009

2 Super Sneaky

Iforone was privy to an exclusive sneak behind-the-scenes peak at shop-label.com’s Look Book 2010 shoot, photographed by Antonia Steyn, styled by Mari Groenewald and featuring Jana Kleyn from Boss Models

Despite starting badly with a no-show model and a frantic scramble to get the day going, the shoot went off without a hitch. ‘I wanted to create an easy-to-follow, and visually gorgeous, look book that online shoppers can browse as inspiration as they shop’, explains owner Sarah Dickson.

To be honest, it shouldn’t be hard to put together an amazing outfit from this bunch of brands. Everytime I go on to the site, I want to die happy: Acne, Sass & Bide, Splendid, J Brand and Paul & Joe Sister, I love them all.

Aah, what a nice surprise…

A couple of months ago Mari shot a Marie Claire upfront editorial at my house. It was a sweltering hot day and Bear and I watched from the sidelines as photographer Romi Stern worked her magic.

I then promptly forgot about it until I bought the latest issue and stopped on the 101 Ideas page going, ‘hey… that looks familiar’.

Thanks guys – you even managed to make it look neat and tidy… no mean feat!

Ooooh, I love this shoot.

As a self-confessed snooze-a-holic and a huge advocator of the Sunday afternoon nap, I love nothing more than to shnuggle under my duvet and just… float…

So you can understand why I totally relate to the yawny beauty of this editorial, shot by Monica Menez for Blonde Magazine, Issue 03.

Wow, am feeling pretty tired all of a sudden. Might need to just…. sleeeeeeeeeeppppp

Divine Dita   November 17th, 2009

dita Divine Dita

Wow, check out the exclusive interview and shoot with Dita Von Teese from this month’s Dossier Magazine…

I love the fact that they’ve shot her sans martini glass and fully clothed because it makes such a change from the norm, yet doesn’t detract from the fact that she’s totally smoking hot. And not in a skanky lad-mag kind of way, but in the kind of way that every girl dreams of being. She turns heads for all the right reasons, full-stop.

For more Dita-fabulousness, check out the very cool ‘Be Cointreauversial’ campaign she’s heading up for alcohol brand, Cointreau.

Blow Me Down!   October 22nd, 2009

At least it didn't rain, right?

At least it didn't rain, right?

Aah, Cape Town. A city blessed with its very own mountain, incredible vistas and an icily beautiful ocean… And radical summer winds.

As an ex-Durbanite, I just can’t get used to it. Like, what the hell? On big-wind days, it feels like someone flipped a switch that morphs friendly little breezes into forces of nature that could do with a course in anger-management.

Anyway…

I popped in to Mari’s shoot for Women’s Health SA Magazine yesterday, and couldn’t believe how well her team were handling the gale force gusts that would have had me running indoors, demanding danger pay! Well done, guys, truly professional to the end.

My First Time   October 21st, 2009

Moments from our day

Moments from our day

Had the most amazing day yesterday – my first stint as stylist, and I was lucky enough to do it for Dossier Magazine, probably the most exciting fashion magazine this country has.

The best thing about it was the creative freedom of the whole experience - I got to choose my subject, write the story, put together the most incredible team (thank you Damon Fourie, Jade Leggat and the lovely Lala from Boss) and then spent the day creating beautiful images of outfits I would kill to wear. Think Jimmy Choo heels, power accessories and the slinkiest of sheaths. Sigh, so dreamy.

Am I happy right now? Hell, yes!

Thank You Obrigado!   October 21st, 2009

obrigado1 Thank You Obrigado!

My very first bit of publicity – whoooo hooooo!!!!

Yup, iforone caught the attention of Obrigado’s supercool editor, Georgia (look, she had very little choice. I work for her and continually bombard her with emails, so really, she had to read my blog, ha ha).

Nonetheless, I didn’t have to bribe, threaten or cajole anyone to get this lovely snippet featured – in fact, it was a fabulously fantastic surprise.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Obrigado. Now where’s my quattro muffin, dammit?

One World   October 20th, 2009

Megan 4up One World

Megan Perks may not have won this year’s Elle New Talent Awards competition, but this shoot (styled by Alexia Kondylis and photographed by Theo Klompje) proves her work translates well from design sketch to tangible object.

‘I used traditional textiles from India, Japan, Mexico and Africa as my print inspiration and juxtaposed this against simplistic geometric shapes,’ says Jade, who designed each piece for the contest, then asked her friend Jade Walters, a surface designer, to silk screen the fabric by hand.

A great team, including top make-up artist Jade Leggat, Alexia and her talented fiance, Theo, on shoot day resulted in these fab photos that hopefully prove the promise of this young designer.

Editorial for Zoot Magazine, Issue no.5

Wow… Got an email today from an old friend, Russell Kleyn, who has been living and working as a photographer in London for the past 10 years. These are some of his most recent fashion images and I’m just blown away by what he’s been up to.

I met Russell in varsity – he was dating my best friend, and we immediately clicked as buddies. How could we not? He was a long-haired, extremely chilled-out hippy boy in baggy jeans and I was, well, ‘finding myself’, if that’s what you can call a bleached blonde pixie cut and a penchant for glo’ sticks. It was the 90’s people, forgive me…

A few years and many late nights (not to mention a hair-colour change) later, we all found ourselves in London together – earning next to nothing but having the time of our lives. Even then, Russell was always painting, sketching or photographing something or someone…

Today, I’m proud to say I know him and despite imminent fatherhood, I’m hoping he and his family will visit one day soon so I can work with him, or even just sit and drink something cold and lovely together while trying to figure out where the time went between then and now…

It was late, everything was funny...
