Hey Lady   March 9th, 2010

I’m not so sure I agree with the description of Valdimir Tseler’s Living Chair as being ’sexy, yet demure’. Inspired by the female form and available in pink or red, it’s all a bit kitch for me, but I’m open to debate on this one!

Like me, photographer Steven Jones is obsessed with shoes and collaborated with bespoke shoe-designer, Hetty Jones, on his latest pin-hole camera exhibition entitled ‘Pinhole Shoes’ that is showing in the Shoe Boutique (2nd floor) of Liberty, London.

If you’re in the big smoke, go check it out. If you’re stuck down south, then read the interview with the photographer on Dazed Digital.

Creative Round-Up   March 1st, 2010

So here are a few of my favourite things from the Design Indaba expos that was at once awe-inspiring and completely overwhelming – so many ideas, talent, people and incredible things happening… What an amazing showcase of African talent!

As for Louise Gelderblom’s work, well, I have no words. Told Scruff I would die right now to own one particular LG piece and he told me that considering how dear they are, I might have to consider my own imminent demise. Doh!

Shark!   March 1st, 2010

DSC04512 Shark!

Maybe I don’t walk around Cape Town enough but on my meander from the parking garage I finally managed to find a park in before trekking over to the CTICC in the 33 degree heat (no, I’m not moaning, ok I am) I happened upon these prehistoric-looking sharkie windmill type sculpture thingies.

I’m sure some people may have seen them before but I haven’t and I have to say, as a girl who surfs and has the utmost respect for toe-nibbling bad boys from the deep, I thought they were beautiful to look at and a very cool piece of art to find in the middle of the city .

Well hello there good looking...

So here is the man himself, Mr Baba Papa by Haldane Martin, lounging around at the Design Indaba Expo looking exceptionally slick.
Was so pleased to see him I was most tempted to do exactly what his comfysexy design demands - lie down and let him just hold you…

Baaaaaa   February 17th, 2010

On my last day in Hong Kong, I was led down the fantastical path known as Gough Street – a decor maven’s mecca thanks to the string of Homeless decor stores that dominate the lane.

The first Homeless store we entered was entirely dedicated to the art of Hong Kong artist Carrie Chau and if you’re in the city, it’s well worth a visit. Chau’s well known for her childlike illustrations that at once enchant and intrigue with their layers of innuendo.

I Heart The Art   February 11th, 2010

IMG 1329 2 I Heart The Art

Back in HK for my last day before the journey home. Thailand was epic, Hong Kong is an absolute blast and, even though I’m so excited to get home to see Scruff and  my baby Bear, it’s been an amazing 10 days.

Some last artistic impressions of the big smoke city that never, ever sleeps.

African Chic   January 29th, 2010

Sylvia Gruber, owner of AfriChic.com

Attended the AfriChic.com launch last night, held at the new art gallery at Ellerman House.

Oh. Wow. The views… And the art… And the clothes… A pretty spectacular combination, especially when combined with lovely bubbly.

Sylvia Gruber, owner of the new e-boutique, has a pretty cool vision: to bring African fashion – made only in Africa by Africans – to the rest of the world.

As we’ve seen evidence of at New York Fashion Week with the African Fashion Collection put on by Arise Magazine, the world is ready to for it, and it’s pretty savvy of Sylvia, who’s Austrian, to tap into this newfound interest faster than any local entrepreneur.

Maybe its time we all start wearing local rather than lusting after international brands that are mostly, now, mass produced in China.

Drooling Over…   January 29th, 2010

… ‘Shiny Happy People’by Neil Roake.

I know it launched end of last year but I finally bought my own copy and have been immersed in it ever since.

It’s a novel approach to cookbooks where the author, Neil, hung out with his eclectic mix of foodie friends, got them to cook their signature dishes for him and then photographed it all, as their homes, pets, wardrobes and art.

The result is a visual feast of a cookbook that, for me, sums up what good food is really all about: a fantastic group of people to eat it with.

Candy Floss   January 25th, 2010

I sent Art Style Scout Willow Constantine off to an exhibition called ‘Spookasem’ at Monique du Preez’ super hip Salon 91 in Kloof Street on Thursday night and this is what she reported back:

‘ I absolutely loved this delightful retrospective of naughty and nice that takes your mind’s eye on a journey through your childhood fears and fantasies.

The line drawings of sweet little girls, rich giclee prints of whimsical demons, and the occasional Femme Fatale with her pet dragon were enchanting, as was the playful take on dualities of good and evil and I think I’m going back to buy one of the well-priced prints’.

Message In A Moment   January 22nd, 2010

missedconnections Message In A Moment

So cute – quirky illustrations from Missed Connections that anyone who has ever lived in a big city can totally relate too.

We’ve all had those moments – you bump into some stranger, or your eyes meet across the room, and something, somehow, connects the two of you. Nothing will ever come of it and you’ll probably never see them again, but in that instant, something profound hangs in the air.

Then again, I spent many tube rides to and from work squished under the armpits of various chubby bankers and as much as I like to think that they cared when they trod on my toes or bashed their briefcase against my knee, I somehow doubt it…

Denim Art   January 18th, 2010

Thought this was a really cool collaboration: Adidas Originals has joined forces with Diesel jeans to produce a pair of jeans with both their logos on.

Locally they then commissioned local graffiti artist, Falke, to produce four pairs of truly original jeans. Check them out at the Waterfront store where they’re on exhibit. I love the ones with the yellow gloves! Just wish they were for sale…

My friend Kelda works in the business side of publishing magazines but is probably one of the more creative people I know.

I’ve been trying to buy her photographs for the longest time, and she’s finally got a blog of her work up so that you can too. Check it out – this is her latest work but she’s also hopefully going to add some of her old stuff up too.

How Do You Spell WAR?   January 11th, 2010

chanel armor 1 How Do You Spell WAR?

Never thought you’d see branding extend to the battle field? Think again.

Artist Tetsuya Noguchi’s concept samurai armour suit – created, apparently, for the image-conscious warrior who wants to flaunt his social status on the battlefield (??) – have Chanel’s double C logo emblazoned all over it.

I’m really not sure what this says about values of the modern day samurai, but I’m thinking the ancients would turn in their graves…

Just downloaded this very cool desktop calendar from Design*Sponge blog - my year for being organised. Or at least trying to be…

There are calendars for every month, so really, there’s no excuse now not to know what day of the year it is. Sigh.

I Think It’s Love   December 14th, 2009

My Nowicki

My Nowicki

Well hello there, gorgeous. I’ve been standing here staring at you staring at me. You know, it’s funny but I’ve actually been thinking about you a lot lately. In fact, it’s safe to say your presence has proven to be a little, well, distracting…

You see, I think you’re lovely and I know you’ve only just arrived but do you mind if I unwrap you from these silly layers and admire you from up close?

Ah, beautiful… Welcome home, my sweet.

Love In Lomo   November 13th, 2009

Shot from the hip

Check out this brilliant blog, edited by my brother, Ramsay (and no, I’m not biased) called Love In Lomo. He launched it last week in conjunction with an exhibition that he showed at, held at Fat Tuesday Gallery in Durban.

I’ve talked about lomography photography before and after hearing how Ramsay shot the Hong Kong sunset image (first image on left in the collage) while he was skateboarding past the couple, I have to admit to being more than a little intrigued with the art and am desperate to get one of these dinky plastic cameras.

If you’re into lomo, all the images on Love In Lomo are for sale, so please support local (and family!) talent.

Love, Lois   November 12th, 2009

It's a wrap!

It's a wrap!

So here is my birthday surprise, from my friend Lois to me, and from me to you…

Let me explain: Lois was part of my dreamteam many moons ago and has since done the sensible thing and gone the freelance route, launching her own illustration and stationary brand, Cavalcade (love the name).

Since we’re both working the freelance circuit (Cape Town is that small), we’ve bumped into each other many times in the past few months, and I’m happy to report Lois Loveday, as she’s affectionately known, is as quirky cute as ever.

Our thinking on this birthday collaboration was that every girl needs great gift wrap, and since I’m always too loskop to buy heaps of it myself, Lois obligingly designed customised gift wrap and a card, ’specially for iforone. Awwww, thanks Lo!

Download it, print it (A3 for the giftwrap) and enjoy.

Art Of Heart   November 9th, 2009

So many drawings, so little time...

So many drawings, so little time...

We have a new interiors and art contributing Style Scout on Iforone, Willow Constantine – the most stylish Alaskan I know, and even better, a permanent convert to the sunny shores of SA… You’ll meet her a bit later.

She attended the 1000 Drawings Art Event last Thursday and said, ‘This event should have been called ‘”‘4,000 drawings, 10 000 people” because it was by far the best-attended art event I’ve been to this year.’

A queue of people lined up around the block on Albert Road, Woodstock – eagerly anticipating their chance to buy one of the thousand [plus] drawings.  Each drawing was donated by local creatives, including artists, photographers, designers, and anyone else willing to share the love, and then sold for R100 each. All proceeds were donated to charity.

‘It was such a vibey scene,’ says Willow. ‘Musicians like Toby2Shoes and Inge Beckman got the room buzzing, and soon it felt like a party-in-the-making.’

Word on the street is that Word of Art, the organisers, offer monthly ‘doodle sessions’ for wannabee creatives… No excuses not to get involved now…

Death Of Cute   November 6th, 2009

salon91 final Death Of Cute

Iforone was super excited about Frank Van Reenen’s Lucky Packet exhibition, which opened at the trendy Salon 91 on Kloof Street on Wednesday night.

When I arrived, the gallery was already packed full of people curious to see Frank’s latest range of neo-pop work, including cheerfully-ominous sculptures (‘Death Of Cute’ and ‘Self-Medication Boy’ were my faves), neon paintings of doe-eyed bambis, hand-coloured etchings and a video installation.

For me, Frank’s work is exciting in its knowing naivety. I love the pop-art colours that leap off the canvas, and the fact that Frank is obviously having huge fun creating his collection. If I could have encircled my arms around her enormous body, I would have given the larger-than-life Shy Girl a bear hug – she’s that endearing.

The fact that five mystery lucky packets of Frank’s work (worth R2000 each) were up for grabs via a raffle might also have had something to do with the excitable, festive crowd…

I, of course, didn’t win (damn this unlucky curse!) so toyed with the idea of ripping one of the tempting lucky packets off the wall and running victorious into the night, but after checking out the steely sharp ends of curator Monique Du Preez’s dangerous-looking stilettos, I (wisely) decided against it and took myself off home…

Circa 2009   October 30th, 2009

Circa Circa 2009

Sam Morrison sent me this photo of this amazing looking new building on the corner of Jellicoe Road in Jo’burg.

‘I’ve watched this amazing structure grow out of the earth, and couldn’t wait to see the end result. I’m pleased to say, Circa is officially almost there.’

Brain child of Mark Read and Pierre Swanepoel, the new three-storey building is an art gallery as well as a space dedicated to Read’s passion for palaentology.

‘When I read this in Business Art it made so much sense because the structure’s vertical, spine-like lines remind me of the bones of an ancient fossil,’ says Sam, adding: ‘I’m sure we’ll be seeing amazing art within its walls, and even more exciting, it’s great to finally have an interesting piece of architecture to look at as I drive along the uber-monotonous Jan Smuts Avenue on my way to work.

Watch this space for the opening.
