LOMO me February 9th, 2010
 My new Lomo love
This is a holiday of photographs… Today I finally bought my very own Lomography Diana F+ camera and have spent a happy half an hour with Ian (style scout gone AWOL since the appearance of Ava The Angelic) assembling it. Am taking it to Thailand and will can’t wait to start experimenting with it.
Then, my sister knows that I’ve always wanted a polaroid camera but Scruff’s New Age obsession has meant stern dismissal of the art form up to this point. I also thought they were defunct due to the melt-down of the Polaroid brand but Fuji has launched a new range of polaroid cameras and, thanks to my sib, I am now the proud owner of a Hello Kitty (yes yes, can you believe it!) Fuji polaroid camera.
As I write this I am busy sticking cheesy polaroids of myself on her fridge, he he mwooo haaaaa haaaaa.
I Heart HK (Hong Kong and Hello Kitty!)

Was treated to the most amazing dinner at Aqua bar and restaurant in Kowloon, Hong Kong, on Friday night.
We started off in the bar with pink bubbles (my favourite) and bar snacks (a godsend considering I’d been cruising the malls until late) and then delicious vino and feasting until late with the view of the Hong Kong skyline and the light show as my view. The interiors of Aqua are pretty impressive but the view, the view is to die for.

Wow, tagged along with my sister today to her friend Natalie’s flat – she lives in Happy Valley (cool name, huh?) – the HK equivalent of Tamboerskloof or Parktown North.
Loved her flat, in particular the art (my favourite was by Natalie herself) and the wallpaper, especially the graffiti goldfish. Whitewashed parquet flooring, a celebration of festive colours and incredible antiques, including a 250-year old bed that she bought in Portobello Market in London.
Camomile tea, custard tarts and the delights of Lola, Natalie’s daughter, and her Frenchie bulldog, Clea, all added to the happy ambience of a cosy Hong Kong afternoon.
It's a bit out of focus, sorry, Neets' eyes aren't so good!
Much to the mirth of my sister and mother who can’t quite believe the jegging, I have been living in my jeg jegs since I arrived in HK… So soft, so comfy, so decidedly practical! They are both now in awe of them and even Neets (my mom) – who is notoriously ordentlik, has ordained that she would wear them.

I, Dragon February 5th, 2010

I love dim sum so was very stoked to hear we were joining my sister and some of her friends for lunch at the amazing Dragon-i, which is a very swish nightclub by night (believe me, the loos are so dimly lit, I almost walked into the invisible door – at lunchtime!) and a sleek restaurant by day.
We sat on the deck, under the birdcages complete with real birdies (and a huge bamboo aviary a few metres away). The food was amazing and the company fantastic!

 Ava The Angelic
I know this is a fashion blog, blah blah, but how unbelievable cute is my new neice? Her name is Ava Dien and she is angelic. As for my sis, Simone, she is an absolute natural – took us lunching and shopping with Ava The Angelic chilled in her pram – no fuss!
 Zip me up, baby!
Considering Mr Rundle’s last collection largely featured zippers in every conceivable variation, methinks he would like my new S&M’ish boots that stopped me in my tracks this afternoon… Can’t wait to wear them out!
Some other bad boys that caught mine eye

First day in the big city, and omg it hums. People on a mission, smart, sleek cars, towering skyscrapers that reach into the fog and shops bursting with, yes, SALE signs. Happy happy days.
China February 3rd, 2010
Last week was apparently my week for making people mad and apart from my blog on the Marie Claire cover (shish kebab, I am unpopular with certain people for that one) I’ve also gotten flack for writing in my blog post on the Africhic.com launch: ‘Maybe its time we all start wearing local rather than lusting after international brands that are mostly, now, mass produced in China.’
My critics have pointed out that it’s hypocritical for me to have that kind of attitude when this blog often reports on international fashion and the many amazing brands that are, ahem, made in China. Not to mention the fact that I am, in fact, on my way to China and yes, am planning to shop.
Forgive me for hastily written posts that often don’t explain the full extent of what I mean and let me explain myself: as a South African blogger and fashion journalist I grew up openly lusting after the international brands that I saw in the magazines I loved. To me, they spoke of authentic luxury… Of a designer toiling away in their atelier, handstitching bespoke items that you’d proudly pass down to your daughter one day.
Today, the fact that a luxury brand is French or American or Italian but mass produces luxury items via a factory in a different country makes it feel less authentic to me. I know that’s probably ridiculous, and it certainly hasn’t stopped me, or anyone else for that matter, buying and wearing them, but it’s something that I think about.
And what about those horror stories of children being chained to their workstations in sweatshops – call me hysterical but how do you know what you’re wearing hasn’t been created at great expense to another human being?
The reality of the situation, however, is that fashion, like any other business, is a giant machine that turns and that machine currently is thriving in a market like China. Some of what comes out of there is utter crap but a lot of it is excellent. The same issues are experienced locally: we have good ideas but often the end product is not well made or is ridiculously expensive for what it is.
Lastly, I do love African design and think that local media should support it more. Elle Magazine does a great job punting local designers and it’s great to see. They deserve to be celebrated and I hope that this kind of exposure grows exponentially this year as we move in to the global spotlight so that local fashion develops into a fully-functioning industry that supports our designers – many of whom battle to make ends meet.
I would be interested to hear what other people think of the issue. I’ve been thinking about the dilemma a lot over the past few days and hope people will comment on the blog - just don’t be nasty, ok, there’s a little thing called constructive criticism!

Just to say that after trialling the J Brand jegging I have promptly blown half my holiday shopping budget on them and am taking them with me to Hong Kong…
Get your own pair now by entering this easy question:

It says, 'Shop shop shop shop shop shop...'
Have been in a flat panic packing so haven’t even had time to blog about the fact that I’m off to Hong Kong today to see my sublime sibling and meet my new niece – yay!
Then I’m off to Phuket to see one of my beste maatjies from Oz get married, happy, happy, happy me.
Will be blogging (no rest for the wicked) throughout and will hopefully have lots to report back so keep reading.
Mwah xx

More great news: illustrator Beatrice Boyle’s seriously hot range of printed t-shirts and dresses are now available in SA, from Neo Boutique at the One & Only Hotel in the Waterfront. They recently caused a stir when displayed in the windows of Browns Focus, along with her art. Loving the post-party girls and their the-day-after-the-night-before make-up.

Sarah Hoberman braving the heat, Paris-style!
Waking up at 5am (OK, I overslept, it was 5:45am) on a Saturday is not something I try to do a lot, but this was far too exciting to miss…
An amazing shoot for Dossier on the ‘farm’ in Tamboerskloof, which I did not even know existed!
The dream team of Marguerite Oelofse (vibing a Madonna-from-the-80’s look with a platinum blonde bob and Wayfarer sunnies), Mari Groenewald (who, ahem, had only had a few hours precious sleep, say no more!), Jade Leggat – oh she of the porcelain skin who braved the 30-something degree heat to create insane hair and make-up, and Sarah The Fantastic, who must be the most organised person on this planet.
We worked ahead of schedule and finished up in time for Marguerite to get the The Met… Nice work everyone!

Was at a (v. fun) wedding on Saturday and had to snap some of the killer heels (yes, one of them is mine, can you guess which ones?) that seemed to be the order of the day…
